George W. Grandey papers, 1839-1876.

Letters to Grandey, a few of which concern his legal practice in Vergennes or his participation in Vermont politics and some of which are copies of letters of recommendation he wrote for various young men. The bulk (1852-1857) relate to his position as Quartermaster General of the Vermont Militia during a time of significant change for the Militia, and some concern the Norwich University's need for arms already promised by the Legislature. Several letters in 1863 are from his nephew, Jesse Converse, a patient at U.S. military hospital in New Haven, Conn. Includes one letter (1865 Sept. 15) from William Lloyd Garrison accepting an invitation from Grandey to speak at the Addison County Fair about the "great question of unfettered industry." The Vermont Militia was established before the Revolution and its members served in the Revolution and the War of 1812. In 1837 it was reorganized by the state Legislature but service, which was compulsory, was becoming unpopular. In 1842, the Legislature sanctioned the establishment of volunteer companies and in 1844 the Militia was abolished with the exception of the volunteer companies. Much of Grandey's correspondence concerns the condition and sale of weapons which were no longer in use.
